The Art & Culture platform "JIGU-I" aims to awaken sensitivity to life by providing a cultural experience. JIGU-I defines Ecological Art through various art projects: "Earth Eye" (a short film with the theme of 'Eyes' of a child, hope for the future in the destroyed relationship between the earth and humans), "Boat People" (a creative play about the near future of a planet submerged due to climate change), "While Remembering" (a creative play about remembering the extinct beings, summoning them by traditional Korean ritual). Note that "JIGU" means "Earth" in Korean.
On September 7th, the 2024 New Gyeongse Yukyo Climate Change and Silhak Forum was held, hosted by Gyeonggi Province, the Silhak Museum, and Earth Eye.
〈Planning Purpose〉
The forum aims to seek solutions for the current climate crisis by drawing on the wisdom embedded in Silhak thought from the late Joseon Dynasty. Our ancestors, the Silhak scholars, pragmatically diagnosed the situation and sought innovative and practical methods and policies to address these issues. In particular, these scholars strove to understand nature and solve problems using scientific methodologies, even during their time. This event is designed to understand the wisdom of these Silhak scholars, engage in dialogue with future generations, and explore creative solutions to the climate crisis.
The event will proceed with expert lectures, a lecture performance (a theater-style lecture) to help participants better understand Silhak, and will conclude with a comprehensive discussion and a music performance.
Be guided by the old, but create anew (法古創新) One must know how to adapt what is inherited from the past, And in creating something new, one must not lose the essence.
We draw on the wisdom embedded in Silhak thought from the late Joseon Dynasty to seek creative solutions to today’s climate crisis.
We recognize the present and discover the future from the river that has flowed down from our past.
Just as the river flows.
As the river reflects me.
Even if it takes a long detour.
From a far distance.
Rigid thoughts.
Hardened hearts.
Let us, for a moment,
Take them off and pause.
〈synopsis - lecture performance "Take off and pause for a moment"〉
The Earth, the environment, and nature—crumpled within the confines of human standards.
Now, we set aside those standards for a moment and try to listen to their stories.
The river meanders. The river flows in a clear direction. Speed does not matter. Though it may take a long detour, this is their way of creating a stronger current.
Where and how is humanity flowing?
Floods, droughts, and wildfires rage due to climate change.
There are those who ride the unpredictable waters, journeying upstream, back into the past. Whether that place is the past, the future, or the present, no one knows.
But they move forward, following the distant sound of a hopeful song of the oars.
Who is that figure we see far in the distance?
