Session Two hosted by Attorney of Law, Seon-ho Choe, consisted of three presentations under the theme of Civilization Shift and Ecological Civilization: Plans and New Subjects.

Kyoung-min Lee, a professor at Seoul National University College of Medicine, raised the issue of “Beyond Anthropocentricism” and argued that the claim of anthropocentricism advocated after the Renaissance and the Enlightenment is continuing in the postmodern era that does not trust human reason optimistically. He pointed out that anthropocentricism is an error in the field of philosophy as it lacks the consistency of being universally applicable principles and it is not the right from a practical point of view as it is impossible to keep our own species on Earth. Dr. Lee argued that anthropocentrism is a misguided value that has led us to the illusion of self-fulfillment, self-satisfaction, and self-control and humans should coexist with all living creatures no matter what species they are. Dr. Lee concluded his presentation with a hopeful message that we can change our anthropocentricism without changing our identity by overcoming the idea of humans are center of the world.

Kyoo Lee, a professor of philosophy at John Jay College and The Graduate Center, CUNY, gave a presentation under the theme of “Between Macro & Micro: Rescaling the Ordinary”. According to Lee, from the ecology’s perspective the universe can be seen in macroscopic or microscopic perspective. Lee emphasized that macro and micro are not alienated but linked closely by showing a number of artworks including the changed lyrics of John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’, Bill Viola’s video and sound installation ‘He Weeps for You’ and Chris Jordan’s photograph ‘Glass’. Lee also showed a tortoise video with a disposable straw stuck in its nose as an example of how a small object like a straw we use daily can cause a great harm to animals.

Lastly, Taehyun Park, professor of Kangwon National University School of Law, presented under the theme of Earth Jurisprudence and Earth-centered Law: Challenges and Opportunities. Park introduced Earth jurisprudence, the law that links to ecological civilization and also introduced the laws and institutions of the world from the perspective of Earth jurisprudence. According to Thomas Berry only the integrated law based on the global community can sustain the planet as a viable administration and he emphasized that the ecological civilization integrated into the Earth community in the context of the universe is our great task in the current time. Park concluded that in the context of the universe, human civilization, integrated into the Earth community, should proceed toward the Ecozoic Era. This is the great task of our time. Earth jurisprudence and Earth-centered law, which regard the universe and the Earth as community of subjects, and respect and guarantee the fundamental rights of its members, will serve as a guide.
